Seattle Scene

March 30, 2009

A few weeks ago I was on the West coast in Vancouver and took a day trip to check out the scene in Seattle. The weather was great and I was wishing I had brought a bicycle down to ride, especially after stopping in at a few bike shops and seeing what they had to offer.

The first shop I hit up was Free Range Cycles. Located in the Freemont area, this shop has a nice vibe going on. I first noticed the endless strip of Sulry's outside, and the steel bikes continued once inside. A few nice Salsa completes had my thinking of new builds for 2009. I was in a rush but had a chance to chat with Kathleen the owner. Seems like a great shop in a great community.

Just a few short minutes away was Wright Bros. Cycle Works. This shop seems like it has been around for ages, and I say that in a good way. Life seems to be simpler at Wright Bros., as is emphasised on their website "Wright Bros. will not be working on any 11 speed components. When has any bicycle company asked the end user what they needed in a product? We don't need 11 gears" There is a nice co-op workspace in the back and lots of new and vintage parts floating around. Another must see shop in Fremont.

As it took a little longer to make the trip down to Seattle than originally thought, we were a little pressed for time. Between checking out the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, we managed to scope out a few fixed gears locked up as well as a lot of cyclist out on the town. This short trip made we want more of Seattle. Hopefully a longer trip will be in the works very soon.
