Crumpler Yee Ross Backpack
July 20, 2009
Crumpler, in their usual inscrutable way, calls this sweet little backpack the Yee Ross. If I were in charge of naming things at Crumpler, I would call it the snack pack. Like a snack, the Yee Ross is small, but satisfying, it has the capacity to carry a fair few snacks in it, and, like my favorite snacks, it’s sweet! Plus, what the heck is a Yee Ross?
Naming issues aside, the Yee Ross is a nice daypack, especially when it comes to the way it looks. The bold colors and stripes – especially the blue and red one I tested – combined with the vintage school bag shape make for a pretty cool look that’s somewhat reminiscent of elementary school – but in a good way. The bag fits very snug to my back and even when it’s full it maintains a relatively flat shape.
Crumpler has outfitted the Yee Ross with rugged zippers, a detachable (quick release) waist strap, and lots o’ pockets. It has a compartment for a 4L hydration bladder (not included) or a 13 inch laptop computer (also, not included). Other pockets include a midsized zippered pocket inside and two outside pockets, the zippers for which are neatly hidden underneath the stripes / flaps. I really like this feature, because it means I have relatively easy access to my wallet or keys in an outside pocket, but the hidden nature of the pockets means unsavory pickpocket types need not even know they are there.
The Yee Ross has a water resistant shell and ripstop lining. It also has comfy padded shoulder straps and a padded back pad. These add to the cushiness of the bag, but they also make it very warm! The close fit of the pack against one’s back adds to the heat created by the padding, and in summer time this means one sweaty back.
The Yee Ross is a relatively small pack, but I fit my lunchbox, a hoody, a 1L water bottle, a (small) classical work of literature, camera, sunglasses, wallet, keys, extra tube, pump, and cable lock inside. It also fits my helmet inside, with room to spare.
