Mavic A719 Rims

April 21, 2009

For years I have ridden on wheels that have been mediocre at best. Every month trueing the wheel as it would always go out of true. If it was my mountain bike it was because I hit a rut, my commuter hit a curb, and so on. It kinda gets to be a pain, and can be expensive if you do not know how to true your own wheel. When I was building up my touring bike I decided to go all out and get a completely bombproof rim. I went for the Mavic A719, and wow have I ever been impressed.

The rim has been well known in touring circles for years as beeing the best out there. With double eyelets, this rim seems tough enough for any road I take it on. I laced the rims up to a LX hub and used a double butted spoke. So far, 700kms in, it is still straight and round both after long smooth highway stretches, as well as gravel roads and bumpy off road stuff.

The rim is no lightweight, wieghing in at 567 grams, but it is no tank either. Mavic recommends a tire size of 28-47mm, and my 32mm Schwalbe Marathon Supremes fit just great. So far I have not encountered any issues at all, they even survived a crash I had when I hit some ice.

At around $100 a rim, they are not cheap, but these rims are built to last. I have a feeling I will be using the internal wear indicator before I need to replace them for any other reason. These double wall, double eyelet, welded rims are going to last for years.
