Pedro's Bio Grease
September 23, 2009
As a home mechanic I have use for bicycle grease on occasion. The occasion does not pop up that frequently, but when it does I definitely need it. Pedro's makes Bio Grease, an environmentaly friendly grease. This biodegradable grease is non-toxic and designed to do the job of a regular grease while still keeping Mother Earth happy.
I used the Pedro's Bio Grease on my seat post, multiple pedal threads and even on the threads of spokes before lacing up a couple of wheels. While I find most grease to be rather gelatinous, the Bio Grease is more like a cream, both in colour and texture. This was fine for the applications I used it for, but it seemed like if it were being used on the ball bearing of a hub or a bottom bracket there may be some issues with performance. The thin nature of this grease does not instill confidence for long term durability.
As a seat post or pedal thread grease, or any other time you are removing parts and regreasing them often I think the Pedro's Bio Grease will work just fine, but for most heavy duty applications I would opt for a more traditional grease. Sure the Bio Grease is environmentally friendly and biodegradable, but is it really helping anyone if I have to regrease my hub every few months.
