Reverse Gear Mulga 2 Jersey

May 27, 2009

I will admit I am not a recumbent cyclist but I have ridden them on occasion. Reverse Gear is what I would call a specialty clothing maker, not only do they only make cycling clothes but they focus on clothing for recumbent cyclist. I was lucky enough to try out the Reverse Gear Mulga 2 Jersey. This is a nice long sleeve jersey that has one distinct difference, pockets on the front.

I got this jersey with the idea of getting in some longer highway rides in the spring while the weather was cooler. This is a technical fabric jersey, made from 100% high-performance lightweight polyester fabric. So, as much as this is a long sleeve full coverage jersey, it has amazing breathing properties. In early Spring the weather here was far too cool to wear the Mulga 2 on it's own, but I combined it with a thin wool jersey underneath to give a great combination for the weather.

Now that the weather is warmer, the jersey still performs well on it's own. It is by no means made for hot summer days but in 20 degree celcius weather it still remains comfortable and wicks moisture away.

The fit is relaxed, best compared to a mountain biking jersey. This makes it nice and simple and great for casual rides. As mentioned earlier the one distinct difference is the front pockets. Now, for me, this took a little time getting used to. And they really only function when riding on a recumbent. In there element they are great for holding snacks, wallet, camera, etc.... The 11" zip pockets function great on a recumbent and are easy to access all your stuff. Out of it's element, on my touring bike, the pockets are virtually useless, pulling the jersey away from the body.

This is now my go to fall and winter layering jersey. It fits true to size and functions great. If you are a dedicated recumbent cyclist this jersey will function amazingly for you. If you ride up right on a standard bike, you just have to be aware of the limitations of the pockets. Reverse Gear has filled a niche market perfectly, the Mulga 2 looks and feels great.
