The Athlete's Plate
April 28, 2010

Lets not pretend that in anyway I am an athlete. Sure I have done the odd race now and again, but I can hardly be bothered to do intervals when out riding or with hold from having a beer after a ride on the trails. All that being said, The Athlete's Plate by Adam Kelinson is refreshingly simple, and does not seem to care if you are an Average Joe or a pro athlete in training.
The Athlete's Plate focuses on an active lifestyle. This starts off with basics of Making Nutrition A Lifestyle. Seems like a simple concept, but Adam Kelinson really makes it obvious how breaking things down to the simplest form of raw, natural foods. He admits that packaged foods are always going to happen, but if you can focus on the basics, a healthy diet will be easier.
Throughout the book Adam breaks down the way for fuel starved atheletes to feed themselves, even going over Sports Nutrition in a chapter. He does all this in a way that is actually interesting to read. And should provide the necessary tools for both the novice to professional.
The real gem in this book is the 85 recipes at the back of the book. These recipes combined with the rest of the book should help you create the meals you need to succeed. From the simple, Beans and Brown Rice to a full on Spiced Sweet Potato "Risotto" with Chicken and Kale, The Athlete's Plate is sure to have something for everyone.
Kelinson has put together a great resource for everyone keen on getting fit. A definite main stay on my bookshelf.
