Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance
October 8, 2009
Earlier this year we took a look at Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance. Now we take a look at Lennard Zinn's new book Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance. Initially I was thinking that both of these book must be pretty much the same, there cannot really be that many differences in mountain and road components, at least not on the most basic level. But in this 3rd edition Zinn really does touch on some stuff that I had never really thought of, or at least did not think would be covered.
The book stands at a large 424 pages, and much like it's mountain biking cousin it is a really fun read. I am really not that into the technical workings of things, but Zinn makes it enjoyable, and I may even say fun to learn. The book features lots of great drawing that illustrate bicycle components, and even feature many exploded views of parts, pretty cool to see, especially if you are fully rebuilding a part.
Zinn and the art of Road Bike Maintenance touches on ever aspect of the bicycle and how to maintain and fix those parts. It also features a great guide to fitting yourself on a road bike. After working in a retail bicycle shop for 5 years I still find this the most difficult thing to do, partially because of lack of training. After reading this 13 page section I both feel better at fitting others as well as myself. I am not a road racer, but I bike tour and have already made a couple of needed adjustments.
I am really surprised how much I liked this book and how I can see it as a useful tool in addition to the mountain bike version I already have. Zinn knows how to take the reader through the working of a bicycle, step by step, and leave them feeling both confident and ready to tackle the next job. A definite book for any rider, even if they do not work on their own bicycle.
